The Dalmatian Problem The Disney conglomerate is refusing to believe that they have contributed to the abundance of Dalmatians being bred, sold and abandoned in cities throughout the country, by way of their movie "101 Dalmatians". Through this movie, millions of children fell in love with a beautiful, spunky, cuddly, and lovable puppy who could be such fun and a wonderfully, loving companion. Parents ran to the nearest pet shops and breeders to garner one of these "Disney Puppies" for their kids who were so enamored of these wonders of black and white. Dalmatians are wonderful animals, however, they are not for everyone. To make a Dalmatian part of your family, you must be willing to have a very active, hyper puppy who will eventually grow into an adult that will be a "large" animal. When the puppiness wears off, these animals demand care, good activity and exercise, and much attention. Kids can tire quickly of the constant work that can be involved with caring for any animal. Parents don't have the time to care for these animals, and the first thing you know, they are in the shelters, being rescued by the rescue groups, and/or being euthanized due to the overabundance of this breed on the market. This is not to say that Disney is solely responsible for this problem....the parents of the kids who saw the movie, and decided this was the animal they wanted, should accept the largest part of the blame in this regard, for not researching the needs, activity level and care involved with owning this particular breed. There are those who feel Disney should aid the rescue groups, shelters, and foster homes who are providing the care and rehabilitation for these animals who have been abandoned because they were too much to handle. If you are one of these people who agree that Disney should accept a part of this responsibility, then you can send email to the following address. Thank you for caring about these and other animals who find themselves out of a home, and in the shelters. Many of these animals are euthanized, many are in abusive situations, and many are loved, cared for and adored by those who allow themselves to be owned by such a wonderful animal. Let's all do our part for those who are not so lucky to have those adoring families. Go to the Disney Email page to voice your opinion. You CAN help. Copyright © 1997/2002. All rights reserved.
